March 17th - Got your green on...
Every St. Patrick’s Day, dad would ask, “do you have your green on?” With the last name Murray, you assume there is some Irish in you?! Dad lived it proudly, regardless of if or how much Irish his ancestors were.
I grew up embracing the same enthusiasm. How fun to have a holiday that celebrated your heritage, your community, in a BIG way. My childhood neighborhood had a ‘float’ in the annual parade. At least once, one had to bar hop the city in honor. Of course, I make sure to wear something green in tribute to dad. And I will make traditional corn beef and cabbage for family dinner.
On St. Patrick’s Day anyone who wants to be Irish can. Reflecting on just why does the day matter to me, I wonder if it is this ‘belonging’, a theme that runs continuously throughout my story. Whether in a group, with friends, alone, by dunning green and perhaps an Irish beer or whiskey, it feels like I am part of celebrating the day!
Belonging, like happiness, may be a state of mind.
Hmmm, Happy St. Pat's…day 226!
Thank you if you choose to join the journey. Let's hope it is more fun than tears!
